PNG vs JPG vs WebP — which format should you choose?

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, making it best for logos, icons, screenshots, and any graphic with text or sharp edges. The trade-off is larger files, especially for photographs.

JPG uses lossy compression that's excellent for photographs, shrinking them dramatically with little visible difference. It has no transparency and can show artifacts around text and hard edges, so it's less suited to graphics.

WebP is a modern format that often beats both: it supports lossless and lossy modes plus transparency, and typically produces the smallest files at a given quality. Every current browser supports it, though some older tools still expect PNG or JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.

Which formats are supported?

You can convert to and from JPG, PNG and WebP. Transparency is preserved when converting to PNG or WebP.

Is there a file size or count limit?

There's no artificial limit. Very large images are only bounded by your device's available memory.
