How image compression works
Compression reduces file size in two ways. Lossy formats like JPG and WebP discard visual information the eye barely notices — you trade a little detail for a much smaller file, controlled by the quality setting. Lossless approaches (and PNG) keep every pixel but can only shrink files so far.
This tool re-encodes your image in the browser at the quality you choose and shows the resulting size live, so you can find the sweet spot. For photographs, WebP at 70–80% usually gives the best size-to-quality ratio; for graphics with flat colors or transparency, PNG or lossless WebP is safer.

Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my image get?
It depends on the image and quality setting, but photos typically shrink by 40–80% with little visible difference.
Does compression happen on your servers?
No — compression is done in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there are no limits.
Will PNG transparency be kept?
Yes. PNG output keeps its alpha channel; for maximum compression, try converting to WebP instead.
